Target practice can be a lot more effective with better shooting targets. Many are designed specifically to improve your accuracy, while others provide an entertaining opportunity for some friendly competition. Regardless of your shooting goal, a target is the best way to hone your shooting skills.
Types of Shooting Target
Shooting targets are objects or materials in various forms and shapes used for rifles, shotguns and other shooting sports. Targets can be made of paper, "self-healing" rubber or steel—and some even have electronics that let you know your shot hit its mark. A target's centre is often called the bullseye.
There are many shooting targets available to purchase in Australia, and they are mainly classified into two types: non-reactive and reactive.
Reactive targets
Reactive targets are those that have their own internal mechanisms for scoring and providing feedback to the shooter. This means that they can offer instant feedback on where your shots landed, and help you see how close together or far apart your shots were. Some examples of reactive targets include steel targets, bouncing targets, and even explosive targets.
Non-reactive targets
Non-reactive targets are usually paper-based and are used as training aids for new shooters who aren't quite ready yet for more advanced target systems like reactive variants. They can still provide useful information about how well you're shooting. A paper target is the most common type of non-reactive target.
Types of Paper Targets
These types of targets are often used as training aids for new shooters because they allow for easy scoring and feedback. They are usually disposable, paper-based targets with a printed pattern for bullseye shooting. They are typically single-use, with each pack containing multiple sheets. Paper targets can be placed on a flat surface like a wall or fence, or hung from a tree branch using string. They may be made from corrugated board, cardboard, or fibreboard. The most common types of paper targets include the bullseye target and the silhouette target.
Bullseye targets
Bullseye targets are usually printed with concentric rings that indicate where your pellet should hit for the best accuracy. They are typically made of paper or cardboard and are lightweight and portable, which makes them easy to take with you when you go shooting. They are also budget-friendly and can be purchased in large quantities. The main advantage of using bullseye targets is that they allow you to improve your accuracy quickly by giving you immediate feedback on where your pellets hit each time you shoot at the target. This allows you to determine what adjustments need to be made so that next time out, you'll have better results.
Silhouette targets
Silhouette targets resemble animals—such as rabbits, deer and birds—and have vital zones marked in different colours. Great for hunters and shooting enthusiasts who want to improve their moving target aim and accuracy. They are also used in competitions because they test your ability to shoot at moving game animals.
