6.5x 55 Swedish Mauser
6.5×55mm Swedish Mauser is a first-generation smokeless powder rimless bottlenecked rifle cartridge. Also known as 6.5×55mm, or in its native military as 6,5 mm patron m/94 (6,5 mm ptr m/94), which means "6.5 mm cartridge model 1894".
The 6.5×55mm cartridge was introduced in the 1890s and is still one of the most common cartridges in modern rifles built for today’s Scandinavian market. The development of the cartridge began in 1891 as a joint effort between Norway and Sweden aiming to provide a cartridge that could be used by service rifles under the consideration of the United Kingdoms of Norway and Sweden.
To facilitate logistical cooperation between Norway and Sweden, the cartridge was standardised and adopted under the name 6.5×55mm in 1893. Although the two nations had independent armies and consequently used different firearms, each government used this identical ammunition and then purchased their main firearms based on what they preferred. Norway adopted the Krag–Jørgensen M/1894 rifle, while Sweden adopted the Mauser m/1896 rifle design that was based on a Mauser service rifle built around the 7×57mm Mauser cartridge.
6.5X55 CARTRIDGES
There have been various military variants of the 6.5x55 cartridge developed since its creation; types like enhanced precision, armour piercing, tracer, blank, inert and training have all been available.
SPORTING USE
When it comes to hunting, the 6.5×55mm cartridge is one of the most highly prized rounds in Europe (particularly in Scandinavia) and North America. It is used for hunting most kinds of game, including moose in Scandinavia, while in most other countries, it is used for hunting deer and other medium-sized game. Sportsmen who favour the round laud combination of low recoil and the cartridge's inherent accuracy and superb penetrative qualities due to the high obtainable sectional density.
As of 2014, there were at least four mainstream American firearms manufacturers producing a sporting rifle is chambered for the 6.5×55mm: Thompson Center, Barrett Firearms (Fieldcraft), Remington (Model 700), and Ruger. While ammo manufacturers offer loadings of the 6.5×55mm round that are designed for modern hunting rifles that can tolerate higher chamber pressures, Norma, Lapua, Prvi Partizan, RUAG Ammotec, Remington Arms, Hornady, as well as Winchester, Sellier and Bellot loadings are best used in modern hunting rifles that can tolerate higher chamber pressures.
MILITARY SERVICE
The 6.5×55mm cartridge was used in the Swedish Mauser family of bolt action arms comprising the m/94 carbine, m/96 long rifle, m/38 short rifle, and m/41 sniper rifle and the AG42 semi-automatic rifle. The Swedish Mauser arms had a relatively tight 200 mm (1 in 7.87 in) twist rate optimised for stabilising the long heavy bullets used in the 6.5×55 mm military service ammunition.
